Cache management of competing I/O workloads

چکیده

Recent developments in the SCSI-3 standard make it possible for a storage system to develop performance management strategies based, in part, upon the relative importance of competing applications. The compelling benefits of such management, applied to physical disks, were the subject of a companion paper, presented one year ago. The present paper extends this discussion to another key storage system resource: the cache memory. We present a strategy for such management, and illustrate its potential advantages.

I/O Component Characterization for I/O Cache Designs

When investigating I/O behavior, the tracing environment, simulation systems, and simulation model determine what can be measured and simulated. Workloads generate a variety of disk I/O requests to access file information, execute programs, and perform computation. The system presented here includes information about I/O requests, allowing workload components to be characterized individually. T...

DULO: An Effective Buffer Cache Management Scheme to Exploit Both Temporal and Spatial Locality

Sequentiality of requested blocks on disks, or their spatial locality, is critical to the performance of disks, where the throughput of accesses to sequentially placed disk blocks can be an order of magnitude higher than that of accesses to randomly placed blocks. Unfortunately, spatial locality of cached blocks is largely ignored and only temporal locality is considered in system buffer cache ...

Modeling VM Performance Interference with Fuzzy MIMO Model

Virtual machines (VM) can be a powerful platform for multiplexing resources for applications workloads on demand in datacenters and cloud systems. However, it remains challenging for the resource management in such a virtualized system to deliver performance guarantees because of the contention on nonpartitionable sources such as last-level CPU cache, memory bandwidth, and on-disk buffer, which...

Power- and time-aware buffer cache management for real-time embedded databases

Due to the explosive increases of data from both the cyber and physical worlds, the demand for database support in embedded systems is increasing. Databases for embedded systems, or embedded databases, are expected to provide timely in-situ data services under various resource constraints, such as limited energy. However, traditional buffer cache management schemes, in which the primary goal is...

How Could a Flash Cache Degrade Database Performance Rather Than Improve It? Lessons to be Learnt from Multi-Tiered Storage

Contrary to intuition, host-side flash caches can degrade performance rather than improve it. With flash write operations being expensive, cache hit-rates need to be relatively high to offset the overhead of writes. Otherwise, the end-to-end performance could be worse with flash cache. We believe that some lessons learnt from multi-tiered storage systems can be applied to flash cache management...
